[librə'vil], Hauptstadt von Gabun, am Nordufer des Gabunästuars, in der Nähe des Atlantiks, (1993) 419 600 Einwohner (Agglomeration); Sitz eines katholischen Erzbischofs; Universität (gegründet 1970), College für Verwaltung u. a. Fachschulen, Forschungsinstitute (Geologie, Landwirtschaft u. a.), Nationalmuseum (einheimische Kunst); Textil- und chemische Industrie, Sägewerke, Schiffbau, Brauerei; in Owendo, südöstlich von Libreville, neue Industrieansiedlung mit Tiefwasserhafen (Ausgangspunkt der Transgabunbahn); internationaler Flughafen.
 
 
Neben älteren Dörfern der Fang und dem 1843 erbauten französischen Fort Aumale wurde 1849 für 46 von einem Sklavenschiff befreite Afrikaner eine Siedlung gegründet. Libreville ist seit 1910 Hauptstadt der Kolonie, seit 1960 der Republik Gabun.
